Why is this program necessary?

The reading technique we learned as children was designed to help us comprehend highly structured materials in a predictable and controlled learning environment.  As adults we must read large volumes of complex material in a rushed - and sometimes chaotic - work environment.

As a result, adults who don't properly adapt their reading style will experience information overload - a feeling of frustration and helplessness because they believe they don't have enough time to read everything they need to read within stated deadlines.  For many adults this can cause a "why do I even bother" attitude that results in a mediocre reading effort - which leads to slower reading speeds, poor comprehension, and a weak critical analysis of the information they read.

What are the learning / training objectives for this program(See Sample Outline)

Participants will learn how to:

Improve their critical reading and thinking skills
Improve their concentration skills while reading
Increase their overall reading speed and comprehension
Improve their retention and recall of everything they read
Find key information quickly and accurately
  Decipher complex reading material
  Time manage their reading assignments

How is Target Reading different from other speed reading programs?

Difference #1 - Reading Speed

This is not a gimmick course.  Many "speed reading" programs will show you how to "view" 3,000 words per minute or faster, which is useful for researching or reviewing material, but it is not reading - it is scanning.  To read beyond 1,000 words per minute requires you to skip words; when you skip words, you lose comprehension.

As you know, simply having a general understanding of the reading material is not always sufficient.  Technical materials, for example, require a slower, more comprehensive reading approach during certain sections.  Our reading methods actually work like a car accelerator pedal - participants in this program will learn how to adjust their reading speed to match the material.

In fact, by the end of this program participants will see a dramatic improvement in their reading speed and comprehension.  As they continue to apply our reading methods, they should be able to exceed 3,000 words per minute for "light" reading or research work, and 600 - 900 words per minute for more challenging material.

NOTE:  The average reading speed for adults is about 250 words per minute.

Difference #2 - Reading Comprehension

A fast reading speed improves efficiency only if the reader comprehends the material the first time through.  Therefore, this program involves a heavy focus on reading comprehension.  Participants of this program will learn how to structure each reading assignment to ensure the pertinent information is moved quickly to their long-term memory for quick comprehension and fast recall.

To help each participant immediately apply this new skill, they will actually practice our reading strategies on their own work-related documents (while in the training class).

In this program, each participant will also receive a comprehensive workbook containing all the reading strategies with worksheets to help them efficiently apply the strategies. In addition, they will have unlimited online access to their instructor for six months following the training class to receive help with any of the reading strategies.

Does this program provide quantifiable results?

Yes, we administer a pre-test at the beginning of the training class and a post-test at the end.  We will also show the training participants how to assess their own reading speed and comprehension in the future through self-testing.

Can this program be customized?

Yes
, Target Reading can be taught "as is" - or you can have us modify the content and length to satisfy your organization's specific training objectives.  We can also provide day, evening and weekends classes.

There is not an extra cost for customization and off-hours scheduling.
